Stock Finishes

Being a third generation German gunsmith, and working with fine gun stock wood, I've come to appreciate new products that do everything that we expect and more.

Years ago, we used oils to achieve the soft eggshell finish that is so desirable and admired by our customers.

Recently, I tried a new finish (ML Formula #8) that a friend and fellow gunsmith told me about. To say it is "better" than anything I've ever used is an understatement. This finish has the toughness of acrylic finishes, the water-proofing of oil, and the beauty and warmth of hand rubbed oil. We use the sealer (ML Formula #7) first, which by the way, is the same basic ingredients as the finish, but blended to penetrate the pores and seal from the bottom of the pores up. When we used the finish (ML Formula #8) and completed the project, the finished stock had the look and feel of an oil finished piece of fine furniture.

Note: My wife used these products to refinish an antique piece of furniture and she will not use anything else now.

The stock (after finishing) can be either glossy or the time honored, sought after hand rubbed oil look, depending on which way you treat the coats. Both methods, from start to finish are explained in minute detail in the instructions that come with each product.

The instructions even detail separately, how to re-finish stocks, no matter what finish was used on them before. The two products are:

    Stock Sealer - ML Formula #7 - 4 oz.
    Stock Finish - ML Formula #8 - 6 oz.

A kit, consisting of both sealer and finish, is sufficient for several full size rifle stocks. Purchase as a kit for $30.00 (includes shipping).
